Pituitary Coma? Discordant pituitary biochemistry after consumption of a commercially available ‘Sleep Activator’.

Phillips Benjamin , Kumar Mohit

We present a case of discordant pituitary biochemistry which resolved after discontinuing a commercially available combination vitamin supplement. A 35 year-old man presented following an episode of headache and dizziness, preceding collapse and possible seizure activity. Investigations revealed deranged pituitary function: TSH 0.02 mU/l (0.35-5.50), fT4 3.6 pmol/l (10.0-20.0), 9 am cortisol 18 nmol/l (200-500), testosterone >52 nmol/l (8.4-28.7), FSH <0.3 U/l (1.0-18....

Antioxidant and protective effect of estradiol in liver functions of aged female rats

Kumar Pardeep , Baquer Najma

Background: The objective of this study was to observe the changes in activity of antioxidant enzymes, hepatic glucose homeostasis, lipogenic enzymes and lipid metabolism, serum lipid profile and liver function occurring in livers of female rats of 3, 12 and 24 months age groups, and to see whether these changes are restored to 3 months control levels rats after exogenous administration of steroid hormone estrogens (17-β-estradiol, E2).Methods: The ...

An audit of the management of patients presenting with hyponatraemia

Kearney Jessica , Kumar Sathis

Introduction: Hyponatraemia is the most common electrolyte disturbance, affecting 15–20% of emergency admissions to hospital. It is associated with increased mortality and length of stay in hospital. This audit was performed to evaluate how well hyponatraemia is being investigated and managed in the Acute Assessment Unit (AAU).Methods: Sodium level on admission for all patients attending AAU at Conquest Hospital over a 1-...

Bone mineral metabolism in young hemodialyzed women with prolonged amenorrhea

Kumar Manish , Hans Pankaj

Introduction: Since chronic renal failure is accompanied with bone abnormalities, the term renal osteodystrophy has become widely accepted. In women, chronic renal failure is commonly accompanied by endocrine problems that cause irregular menstruation. The majority of investigations on renal osteodystrophy, however, have not considered the potential impact of these hormonal imbalances on the etiology of the bone changes observed in these patients.Objecti...

Amiodarone-Induced Thyrotoxicosis: Case Report

Anizor Chinedu , Kumar Jesse

Introduction: Amiodarone is a widely used antiarrhythmic drug for refractory atrial or ventricular tachyarrhythmias. Amiodarone-induced thyrotoxicosis (AIT) occurs in up to 6% of patients taking this medication in iodine-sufficient areas of the world and in up to 10% in iodine deficient areas. AIT is of two types: type 1 is a form of iodine-induced hyperthyroidism whereas type 2 is a drug-induced destructive thyroiditis. Type 1 AIT tends to occur in patients with underlying th...

The management of their potential side effects, however, remains suboptimal, and guidelines are not comprehensive. Our institute has had cases of patients presenting with hyperglycaemic emergencies due to steroid induced diabetes.Aims: 1) To obtain an estimate of the frequency of the use of medium and long term...
